Anya: "I Was Blown Away"

HYATTSVILLE, MD -- DeMatha Catholic center BeeJay Anya was one of the most coveted 2013 recruits still on the board as his team's Stag Madness event began Friday night.

DeMatha Catholic center BeeJay Anya was one of the most coveted 2013 recruits still on the board as his team's Stag Madness event began Friday night.

North Carolina State, Indiana, Pitt and UCLA were among the schools in contention for Anya's services, and although NCSU arose as the favorite in recent weeks, the Wolfpack faithful were no doubt still thrilled to see the 6-9 Anya don a red Wolfpack hat and make it official.

We sat down with the newest member of the Wolfpack to discuss his recruitment, his decision and his plans for the upcoming year in this exclusive Q&A.

NC State's coaching staff immediately became involved with you in 2011 when they were hired, with coach Moxley heading up your recruitment. Can you talk about those initial conversations and your first thoughts of NC State at that time?
Honestly, I didn't see myself going to NC State in the beginning. I just thought they came out of a hole, and I felt I couldn't go and play there. A player like me, I need to play with good players and a good coaching staff.

I didn't really know much about the coaching staff. After this past season, watching them play and everything they did with the recruiting class they had coming in, you know, it opened my eyes.

I went on my visit, it felt like home. I think that definitely opened it up for me.

State remained with you throughout the process, and your first visit to Raleigh was an unofficial trip a few months back. What were your thoughts on the school?
I was blown away. That was the first school I visited and I was blown away. I think I knew then I wanted to go there.

My mom was like, it's my first visit and to take my time and go see other schools. I did that; I went to Indiana, I went to Pittsburgh, I loved it so much. After the first visit I told the coaches that I was coming there.

You narrowed your list down to Indiana and NC State. You visited Indiana first, did they lead going into the trip to NC State?
I like Indiana. I like the coaching staff. Victor (Oladipo) is there, he's like my big brother.

I don't think anything compared to NC State. You know NC State was the right fit for me. A player like me, a person like me, NC State is the right place for me.

Talk about your official visit to NC State. What stood out to you the most?
I want to say the family atmosphere over there, everyone looks after you.

What sealed the deal was when I sat down with Athletic Director Debbie Yow. She was great. We talked, it was supposed to be for five minutes but we stayed in there for an hour and a half to two hours just talking. She seemed like a very genuine person and she told us stories about her sister Kay Yow, who died of breast cancer.

It touched me and took my heart and my mom's heart as well. I felt that it was the place for me.

Ultimately, when did you first inform the coaches that you would be signing with the Wolfpack?
Right after my visit.

How did they react?
[Laughing] Coach Moxley said he was doing the Dougie in the parking lot when he found out.

Coach [Mark] Gottried was screaming on the phone "Woohoo!"

How tough was it to notify Indiana of your decision?
I actually didn't notify them, they're probably finding out right now.

NC State now has landed you, Cat Barber, and Kyle Washington. You played on the same team with them at the Global Games. Did knowing them play a role in your decision? What do you think of them as players?
Cat, first and foremost, he's a great point guard. He's so quick and so fast and he is such a good floor general and he knows how to run the team. I need to play with a good point guard.

Kyle, a power forward, he's an energy guy. He plays with so much energy and so much enthusiasm for the game. A player like that, I can feed off of his energy. When I'm tired, Kyle will say, 'C'mon B, let's go.' He's the kind of guy that's going to push me through fatigue and make me a better player.

Do you have anything you would like to say to Wolfpack Nation?
I'm excited and Go Wolfpack! I hope for a National Championship this year.
